Template:Disambig
This template creates a message box for disambiguation pages and adds those pages to categories, chiefly Category: Disambiguation pages. The formatting of the message box comes from Template:Dmbox.
Syntax
{{disambig}}
{{disambig|about=|same=|epo=|subcategory1|subcategory2|...}}
{{disambig|articles=|epo=|subcategory1|subcategory2|...}}
{{disambig|text=|epo=|subcategory1|subcategory2|...}}
Usage
{{disambig}}
with no arguments creates the following message box and adds the page to Category: Disambiguation pages.
|
This disambiguation page lists articles associated with the same title. If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
Message customization
The box's message can be customized, although the second line ("If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article") is always the same. For more fine-grained control, use Template:Dmbox.
The message should only be customized if the resulting message applies to every entry in the disambiguation page. For example, the message box on Great Desert currently reads "This disambiguation page lists articles about locations associated with the same title" because both of its entries are locations—but if even one non-location entry is added (e.g., a hypothetical new MTG novel titled Great Desert), then the message box should be changed back to its default. Jumpstart is an example of a page where having just one entry unrelated to the others (in this case Jump-start) means it uses the default message box.
Message options
about=THINGS
adds the phrase "about THINGS" immediately after the word "articles". {{disambig|about=tournaments}}
creates:
|
This disambiguation page lists articles about tournaments associated with the same title. If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
same=TITLETYPE
replaces the word "title" with "TITLETYPE". {{disambig|same=nickname}}
creates:
|
This disambiguation page lists articles associated with the same nickname. If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
about
and same
can be combined. {{disambig|about=creatures|same=mythological title}}
creates:
|
This disambiguation page lists articles about creatures associated with the same mythological title. If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
articles=PHRASE
replaces everything after the word "articles" (except the period and the second line) with "PHRASE". {{disambig|articles=whose main purpose is to collect dust}}
creates:
|
This disambiguation page lists articles whose main purpose is to collect dust. If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
text=SENTENCE
replaces the entire message (except the second line) with "SENTENCE". {{disambig|text=Help, I'm trapped in a disambiguation page message box!}}
creates:
|
Help, I'm trapped in a disambiguation page message box! If an internal link led you here, you may wish to change the link to point directly to the intended article. |
Category customization
By default, this template adds pages to Category: Disambiguation pages. The following changes can be made, either by themselves or in combination with message customization options above.
Criteria for adding subcategories can be found on each subcategory's page. For example, Category: Character and person disambiguation pages is for pages where "at least two entries are real people, fictional characters, and/or fictional creatures", while Category: Disambiguation pages eponymous to a setting is for pages where "most or all entries are named after one specific plane or setting". It's okay to add a page to multiple subcategories, as long as that page meets the criteria for each one. The high-level Category: Disambiguation pages is for all disambiguation pages, not just those which lack any subcategories.
Category options
Unnamed arguments ARG
are added as categories in the form [[Category: ARG disambiguation page]]. For example, {{disambig|eponymous|Secret Lair}}
adds the page to Category: Eponymous disambiguation pages and Category: Secret Lair disambiguation pages. Up to five categories can be added in this way (unnamed arguments 1
through 5
).
epo=SOURCETYPE
adds a category in the form [[Category: Disambiguation pages eponymous to SOURCETYPE]]. For example, {{disambig|epo=a setting}}
adds the page to Category: Disambiguation pages eponymous to a setting.
nocat=1
(as in {{disambig|nocat=1}}
) prevents the page from being added to Category: Disambiguation pages (it does not cancel any additional categories from the above options). This option should not be used in disambiguation pages, only in template documentation and other non-disambiguation pages; Category:Disambiguation pages is meant include all disambiguation pages.
Other templates
The following templates have custom disambiguation message boxes with built-in categorization. Such a template should be used only if its message applies to every entry and its subcategory is appropriate to the page. For example, a page listing two decks and one creature type should not use {{disambig deck}}
(it meets the Deck disambiguation pages criteria, but doesn't match the message); instead, {{disambig|deck}}
adds the appropriate subcategory while keeping the default message.
