Add that protection doesn't only applies to permanent, but also to players.

The rabbit-hole goes deeper than I thought (as I just commented on "Cipher"). Protection is NOT covered in CR 702.15. CR 702.15 actually covers lifelink. In reality, protection is covered by CR 702.16 (a-j). /Lukeoto

Alpha

In Alpha, protection was an exemption from everything, like, a Black Knight was immune to Wrath of God for a hot second there until they clarifed the rules. The more strict rules of Revised and on could not do that so they settled on the damaged, enchanted, blocked and targeted effects. Interestingly, with today's tech (like phasing's "Treat it as it doesn't exist") they could change the rules so it works like it did originally, if they wanted to. Not sure that would play well although it'd be easier to learn.
