Talk:Old School
Article expansion
I'm keen to change/expand this article a bit: in particular the 93/94 section to add in more info about Swedish and to touch on the three main "American" variants (PAC/EC/Atlantic) - there's a good comparison table for which cards are restricted in those four common rulesets which would be pretty helpful to include. (ie: in this format you can play 1 strip mine, in this one you can play 4... etc)
Then the other variants maybe could be condensed into one section listing the more prominent ones, and maybe removing some of the less ones. I don't think OS95 or OS96 are anywhere as commonly played as "Alpha to Alliances", for instance, and there's nothing about singleton or pointed variants either. Same for "Set Name 40" type formats. Obviously I'm going to want to research this a bit more, but that's my impressions.
Finally Premodern, Middle School and old Frame Vintage could be grouped as being "related formats" since in practice whenever Old School is talked in my experience it's generally limited to variants which cut off before Mirage. Beatsandskies (talk) 22:30, 10 February 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, go for it! Sounds like you've got a good plan. There are just a couple of things to be cautious of. If you're dividing the variants list into prominent vs. non-prominent, you'll need some references showing that the variant is prominent (e.g. tournament data, community groups, etc.) Secondly, there's no issue with grouping Premodern, Middle School and old Frame Vintage. Ideally they would be "See also" links to individual articles but as only Premodern has one, just make sure to stick a
{{main|Premodern}}
after the sub-heading for that one. -- RivalRowan (talk) 00:28, 11 February 2025 (UTC)- Getting things to a pretty good state, probably want to get a few more citations in for certain things. The "Variants" section is currently a bit of a placeholder, will be expanding that next. Beatsandskies (talk) 09:57, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
- I'm pretty happy with how this is looking now. There's probably still small adjustments that could be made, and no doubt I'll do a bit more tweaking over the coming days. I think there's a case for adding sections giving a brief descriptions of popular deck archetypes or describing some of the culture of the format (tournaments often being held in pubs, stamping/signing "worthless" cards for prizes, charity events etc) but I'll pass the torch to someone else for any further major expansions of the sort.
