Nickname

... okay, I really want some kind of citation for this. I'm amused, but I really don't expect that this name is in any kind of common use. The search results I'm finding are all about some emergency respiration technologies, or oddities among non-human animals. Corveroth (talk) 01:44, 19 June 2025 (UTC)

I've seen this before, but fairly recently and a bit jokingly. I think it may have been in the comments section of a "Precon Decon" video on the TriceratoppingMTG youtube channel. Beatsandskies (talk) 01:58, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
I'll have to admit I was the one who put the original paragraph regarding this mechanic in in 2022, to the point where any reference past that might be because they saw it here. I don't recall where I saw it but it's probably uncitable: turns out that the internet didn't really archive the 2010s as much I thought they would. Any nickname for it would need to be from before 2010, given it stopped being printed in 2013. Shield (talk) 03:30, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
It is also the oracletag on scryfall for that ability. That being said "holy armor" (as the card in Alpha) makes so much more sense to me. - Yandere-sliver (talk) 08:34, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
I think the next thing to check is whether Scryfall came up with it independently or from a third-party source, or if they're copying from the title here in a Jeff Lee-esque ourobouros of appeal to authority. Corveroth (talk) 09:37, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
That is a good idea. I wanted to learn more about the tagging system in scryfall. - Yandere-sliver (talk) 09:41, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
A comment on a reddit post from 2014 by /u/AcadianBaconOfficial: "Butt-breathing: +0/+X until end of turn. I didn't make it up, but I find it hilariously fitting!" [1] The oldest thing I could find with a quick look. But I'd definitely agree that Holy Armour makes more sense too. Beatsandskies (talk) 11:44, 19 June 2025 (UTC)
I have no opinion on the naming but just want to throw out that I've heard "buttbreathing" used often on LoadingReadyRun, I see it used as early as 2021 on LRRMTG. I imagine that's one source for its use in the community (it's certainly led to me using it). RudleyDudley (talk) 05:37, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Options on rename: I'm partial to "armorbreathing" as it shows the parallel to firebreathing and incorporates the original card and doesn't sound as goofy as buttbreathing but it is just as casual. "Armor ability", "Holy Armor" or "Holy Armor ability" requires some background, but is similar to other cardname based mechanics. The fact that Holy Armor is an old card is less of a problem given the ability hasn't seen print. Shield (talk) 00:24, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
I'd go for "Holy Armour Ability" personally. The most important factor is that it is an Aura from Alpha so there is that connection with Firebreathing, but the flavour used for cards which have/grant the ability tend to have a Paladin type vibe so that fits too. Eg: Capashan Templar from UDS. Beatsandskies (talk) 01:12, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Holy Armor piggybacks knowledge of a card that hasn't been printed since Fourth Edition. Armorbreathing doesn't have that weakness, but it's imprecise, and creating a novel "*breathing" label seems more cutesy than practical. Why invent a nickname when we could simply describe it naturally, perhaps Toughness Pumping? Corveroth (talk) 03:24, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
If that's the case, I put forth that the page is not dense enough to be its own and propose the section can be folded into the +0/+N section in creature pumping. Shield (talk) 03:45, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
