Stuart Griffin is a former Magic artist. One of his paintings, titled The Green Man, has the unusual distinction of being printed on a Magic card, Maro, despite not actually being commissioned for the game.

The Green Man

The original painting, framed.

The art director for Mirage, Sue Ann Harkey, spotted The Green Man while touring art shows in Europe. She purchased the rights to the image and added Griffin to her list of freelancers. The Green Man was used in Mirage as artwork for Maro, which is named after Mark Rosewater.

Rosewater later purchased the original painting from Griffin for $800.[1]

The Green Man illustrated the cover of the twentieth issue of Kartefakt, a German trading card magazine.[2]

Artwork for Magic

Griffin illustrated four other cards for Mirage, and continued to work for Magic in Visions, Fifth Edition, and Weatherlight. He returned a decade later to contribute four cards to Time Spiral.
