MTG Wiki Policies
In wiki-speak, notability is the core quality that determines whether a topic should have an article. In addition to Wikipedia's general notability guideline, the following subject-specific notability guidelines apply here.
Wizards of the Coast as a source
Determining notability usually starts with finding reliable, independent sources.
Wizards of the Coast is, by definition, the most reliable source for many of the topics covered on MTG Wiki. Often, Wizards is the only source. As long as Wizards sources provide sufficient detail to write a full article, that article can rely on only those sources. If little information is available, it might be appropriate to place that topic in a list, rather than an article.
Wizards is not an independent source. Wizards sources are fundamentally biased in favor of the company, and as a result are not always reliable. When relying on Wizards sources, take care to maintain a neutral point of view and avoid merely promoting Wizards and its products.
Magic: the Gathering
Every article on MTG Wiki must be related to Magic: the Gathering in some non-trivial manner.
Game terms
Named game mechanics are implicitly notable. Unnamed mechanics demand some proof of notability.
Individual cards are generally not notable. The strategies and deck archetypes that center around them may be.
Fictional elements
Characters in the game's fiction are notable. Characters with only trivial mention may not warrant an independent article, but can still be documented in a list of secondary characters for the setting in which they appear.
Products
Every Magic product released, previewed, or even cancelled by Wizards of the Coast is notable, as long as an adequate source exists describing it.
Specific third-party products, even licensed products, are often not. Third-party manufacturers may be notable.
Universes Beyond
Each Universes Beyond (UB) product warrants an article for the product itself. Named game mechanics introduced in those products, such as keywords or creature types, are also notable.
Articles about Universes Beyond characters, worlds, and other fiction elements are outside of the scope of the MTG Wiki. Articles for these subjects should not be created without first seeking consensus from other editors.
Community websites
Community websites are rarely covered by each other, or by independent sources. Notability is determined by consensus.
People
People can become notable by winning certain major tournaments, or participating in the development of Magic as an employee or credited artistic contractor of Wizards of the Coast.
Wizards of the Coast employees
All Magic designers and developers are notable. Artists are also notable.
Content creators
Creators like bloggers and streamers are rarely covered by each other, or by independent sources. Notability is determined by consensus.
Professional players
Players awarded any of the following are notable by virtue of that accomplishment.
- Pro Tour Champion
- World Champion
- Player of the Year
Pro Tour Runners Up, winners of an Arena Championship, and winners of Magic Online Champions Showcases may also be notable.
Similar achievements in older professional play structures also confer notability.
- Rookie of the Year. Last awarded in 2018.
- Hall of Fame inductees. Last awarded in 2019.
- Players who earned 100 lifetime Pro Points, a system retired in 2019.
- Players invited to the Rivals League or Magic Pro League.
Regional Champions are not notable.
