Painter is a Legacy deck based around combining the effect of Painter's Servant with Grindstone.

Overview

Painter is an artifact-based combo strategy that wins from milling the opponent out of the game in one go.

As mentioned previously, the deck will assemble Painter's Servant and Grindstone in order to win.

The effect from Painter's Servant makes it so that Grindstone mills the entire deck of the opponent.

The deck can be found in a somewhat wide variety of combinations of the colors White, Red and Blue.

It is a fairly consistent strategy that can be enabled by tutors from many colors. And all tend to benefit from Urza's Saga.

Graveyard recursion is also found in many versions due to how efficient the strategy is with Legacy's card pool.

Contemporary Decklists

The following are some of the possible color combinations in which the Painter strategy is possible.

Mono-Red Painter

Mono-Red Painter benefits from the tutoring ability of Goblin Engineer and the Graveyard recursion found also not only in Goblin Engineer, but in Goblin Welder as well.

The deck also benefits from Imperial Recruiter. This allows for the player to find Painter's Servant or Grindstone indirectly (by going for Goblin Engineer first).

Being a Red deck, Blood Moon is a nice choice for Side board options.

Mono-White Painter

The Mono-White version may have access to Enlightened Tutor, but it can also work with the tutoring ability of Oswald Fiddlebender.

The deck has a myriad of utility creatures: Hex Parasite, Esper Sentinel, Ethersworn Canonist, Ingenious Smith.

Since the primary color is white, it can benefit from a powerful Graveyard hate card: Rest in Peace.

Boros Painter

The Boros version inherits a bit of both previous versions.

It has the tutoring of Enlightened Tutor, Imperial Recruiter and Goblin Engineer. And it benefits from Graveyard recursion from Goblin Engineer and Goblin Welder.

Blue Painter

The Blue version contrasts some more with the previous versions, but still uses the same combo to win. However, it has access to Force of Will for defense.

The deck also benefits from Emry, Lurker of the Loch and Urza, High Artificer.

The deck also has access to more card draw with Thought Monitor and Preordain.

Notes on Painter

As seen, Painter has a wide variety of color combinations for players to choose from. And it is also one of the decks in which Reserved List cards are not mandatory.

And the need for Reserved List cards in the list is not mandatory. This makes it more interesting for new players because the competitive play styles are available in a wider range of options for the player to choose from.

Painter is a somewhat unique strategy when it comes to its color combinations. It isn't common to find a deck that has such a wide, contrasting variety of possible competitive decklists.

In the end it is totally up for the player to choose which color they want to build their Painter deck in.
