Kevin Desprez is a French judge and former pro player. He created the Duel Commander format.
Career
Desprez was an early member of the Commander Rules Committee, where he addressed the interests of players who sought to play Commander as a two-player, 1v1 format.[1] In 2007, he formed the Duel Commander Committee to steer a new format, furthering that goal.[2][3]
Desprez began judging in 2002. He advanced to L2 in 2003, L3 judge at the 2006 World Championships in Paris, L4 at the 2008 World Championships in Memphis, and finally L5 in 2014. He played a role in designing the Exemplar Program for recognizing excellence in judging. In 2014, he stated that his most impactful work was to redefine cheating, such that players unaware that their actions broke the Comprehensive Rules would not automatically be disqualified.[4] In 2016, he became a Program Coordinator for the Judge Program.[5] Desprez was a member of the 2019 Hall of Fame Selection Committee, which selected Reid Duke as the final Hall of Fame entrant.[6]
Desprez served as secretary for La Fédération Française de Magic the Gathering (FFmtg), an organization that managed professional play in France.[1][7]
As of 2008, Desprez had played in six Pro Tours.[7]
