Among Wizards of the Coast's Magic: The Gathering R&D, a hat trick is a term for a card that appeals to all three players types (Timmy, Johnny, and Spike).[1]
The term was first used in 1858 in cricket, when a player scored three wickets in three consecutive deliveries.[2] Since then, many sports adopted the term, including soccer, water polo, and ice hockey.
Examples of "hat tricks"
- Mindslaver — Timmy loves the coolness of the effect; Johnny likes it as a tool to do things he never could before; and Spike enjoys its raw power level and puzzle-making properties.
- Verdant Force — Timmy likes the big creature and token generation; Johnny likes the combo potential of a creature that makes a token creature every turn; and Spike sees it as a good reanimation target.
