Pop! Magic is a line of Funko Pop! figures based on Magic: The Gathering.

Description

Funko is a company that manufactures and produces a wide array of licensed pop culture toys and collectibles. Founded in 1998, Funko originally produced bobbleheads and other collectibles. In 2010, Funko decided to take a chance on a new line of vinyl figures called Pop! Vinyls, that were affordable, cute, and easy to collect. In 2011, the first Pop released was a Batman figurine.[1]

Pop! Vinyl figures

The instantly recognizable Funko Pop! Vinyl figures are typically 3.75-inch tall super stylized figures, modeled in a Japanese chibi style. Chibi is an art style common in anime and manga where characters are drawn in an exaggerated way, typically small and chubby with stubby limbs, oversized heads, and minimal detail. The English term "chibi" derives from the Japanese chibi kyara (ちびキャラ, "tiny character"). The squary heads of the Pop! Vinyl figures are the most recognizable part as they are substantially larger than the bodies. They feature large, solid black eyes widely spaced on the face. Typically, the mouth and eyebrows are missing from a standard Pop! Vinyl.

One of the key factors behind the success of Funko Pops is their ability to distill the essence of beloved characters into a whimsical, stylized form.[2] The figures are highly detailed and feature a wide range of characters from popular movies, TV shows, video games, and other pop culture franchises. Over the years, the company has released Pops based on everything from comic books and movies to television shows and video games, cementing their status as a beloved staple in pop culture collectibles. As the line expanded, Funko introduced variations, such as metallic and glow-in-the-dark editions, further fueling the collecting appetite.

Magic: The Gathering

On February 16, 2014, Funko announced a licensing agreement with Wizards of the Coast to produce planeswalker figures for their popular Pop! Vinyl Figures and new Legacy Collection Action Figures lines.[3]

The first Pop! Magic series, released in April 2014, featured Jace Beleren, Garruk Wildspeaker, Chandra Nalaar, Liliana Vess, Ajani Goldmane and Nissa Revane (as featured in Magic 2015). The second series, released in August 2018, featured Nicol Bolas, Sarkhan Vol, Tezzeret, Elspeth Tirel, Gideon Jura and Kiora Atua.[4][5] Special editions include Chandra "Glow in the Dark",[6] all-black Garruk [7] and all-black Bolas.[8]

One of the popular features in Magic designer Mark Rosewaters "Tales from the Pit" comic on his Blogatog Tumblr was an ongoing "sit-com" with planeswalkers he made using the Funko Pop! figures. He called the recurring feature "Sparks."[9]

The year 2025 saw two new series of Funko Pop! Magic. Series 3 (released in September) contained Ashiok, Fblthp and Oko. Series 4 (expected in December) contains Urza and Yawgmoth.[10]

Although it wasn't marketed as Pop! Magic, a Transformers figure was released in that same month, using the art of the Optimus Prime, Hero // Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader card.[11] The card itself was depicted as inspiration, but not part of the package.[12]
