Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated (すべての人類を破壊する。それらは再生できない) is a Japanese manga series written by Katsura Ise and illustrated by Takuma Yokota, themed around the game of Magic: The Gathering (2019 -). Originally translated as Destroy All Humankind. They Can’t Be Regenerated, an English version was released in October 2024, under the name Destroy All Humans. They Can’t Be Regenerated.[1]

Overview

It’s the nineties at Tokiwaga Middle School. And for gamers like Hajime Kano, the release of Magic: The Gathering means nothing will ever be the same again!

The story takes place in 1998 (during the Urza block). The teenage characters play the game, mention specific cards and archetypes of the time (e.g. Turbo Genius) and also play different game types (draft, type II, and so on). The main protagonist Emi Sawatari plays white, her friend Hajime Kano plays black and the French girl Lou plays blue.[2]

In everything he does, it seems like geeky Tokiwagi Middle School student Hajime Kano comes in second place behind popular honor student Emi Sawatari. But when Hajime takes a trip to a new game store he’s been hearing about, their rivalry takes an unexpected turn.

Volume 2

It’s the summer of 1998 in Japan. Hajime and Emi enjoy some fun in the sun at the pool, and cast spells and summon creatures at their first official Magic: The Gathering tournament … after which, they start to see fireworks — literally and figuratively!

Volume 3

As their 1998 summer vacation comes to an end, the release of Magic: The Gathering's new expansion, Urza's Saga, garners excitement from Hajime and the other players. Amidst the hype, Hajime runs into a mysterious yet somewhat familiar girl during an autumn field trip.

Volume 4

The year is 1998. The prophesied “end of the world” is nipping at the planet’s heels along with the cold winds of winter. After an intense game of Magic with his best friend Kurushima, Hajime makes a promise with him that he intends to keep—to meet each other at one of the biggest tournaments in Kyoto. However, when Emi gets upset with Hajime at karaoke, he finds himself weathering more than just the icy cold of winter.

Volume 5

Happy New Year, 1999! It's the Grand Prix Kyoto, the year’s first big Magic: The Gathering tournament, where players assemble from all over the country to test their skills and prove their worth. Hajime Kano will be up against mighty foes—but he’ll also encounter a challenge of a different sort: an unexpected romance!

Volume 6

Following the conclusion of the Grand Prix Kyoto, the spirit of romance is in the air! Hajime searches for a White Day gift for Emi! Will he find the perfect present?

Volume 7

Springtime becomes turbulent when a French transfer student comes to town, and the showdown between Magic players Kuon and Yakumo draws to a close. Also, Hajime finally tells Emi how he feels about her! How will Emi respond?!

Volume 8

In the summer of 1999, Hajime finds a new friend in Lou, a transfer student from France. Meanwhile, Yakumo invites Hajime on a date and things get awkward between the two as her feelings for him come to the surface. In the aftermath, they all head off to Ikebukuro for the Regional Championship to see who will represent Japan on the world stage.
