Cyrille de Foucaud is a French former professional player. He was at GenCon in 1993 when Magic was first released, where he was given his first Starter deck.[1] He claims to have won the first Magic tournament held in France, taking advantage of the original mulligan rule by playing a deck with no lands: just Black Lotus, Time Twister, Recall and Fireball.

Cyrille is best known for his Top 4 finish at the 1994 World Championships. He continued to play more casually after this, though still managing to qualify for the Pro Tour a number of times.[2] His last major appearance was the 2001 World Championships where he represented Switzerland, despite living in France.

He was also the editor-in-chief of the Lotus Noir magazine, the French equivalent of the Duelist, for five years.

1994 Worlds

Cyrille was beaten by Bertrand Lestrée in the semi-finals of the 1994 French Nationals, missing out on automatically qualifying for the 1994 World Championships. He attended the Gencon event where the tournament took place, securing registration. Cyrille was again beaten by Lestrée in the semi-finals[3].

“  Cyrille said that he swept through the early parts of the tournament, but ultimately lost in a very close semi-final with Bertrand when he encountered that scourge of all Magic players: "mana death." But, added Cyrille, "The trip was not a total loss. So far, playing for ante, I have won eight Black Lotuses and six Moxes."  ”
