Image purge/Category function
{{keyrune}} is currently up-to-date with all the known set symbols (as at March 6, 2024). Does anyone have a problem with purging the images from Category:Magic set symbols we no longer need? The following images would not be deleted (unless anyone has an argument otherwise):
File to keep | Reason |
---|---|
Disambiguation | |
![]() |
Used on the disambiguation page for A22. |

Examples | |
![]() |
Used on the Mythic rare article as the example symbol of the rarity. |
![]() |
Used on the Judge Gift article as the example and with an explanation of the symbol's meaning. |
Used on the Purple and Timeshifted articles. The color symbols produced by keyrune ( & ) are not quite as clean as the .SVG file. | |
![]() |
Used in the Acorn article. Due to the unique history of the symbol (being quietly added by WotC behind the scenes), it does not make sense to include it in the infobox. (Update: It looks like WotC have now removed the symbol from use in Gatherer but not from the Product Archive. I'll investigate more when I have time.) |

![]() |
Used on the Core Set article and as an example in the Expansion symbol article of WotC refining the core set symbol over time. |
Other | |
![]() |
Used by Yandere-sliver as an icon for their Talk page in their signature. Will cause errors on a lot of Talk pages if deleted. |
All other symbols appear only on their set page and were placed there before keyrune was updated to include them. -- RivalRowan (talk) 06:17, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, I would object. I think they serve a purpose, because they are far more clearer and showing more detail than the keyrunes. --Hunterofsalvation (talk) 07:23, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- Does that mean we should be adding symbols retroactively? I'm not fussed one way or another but just want the category's function to be clear. At present it's supposed to be a place holder until keyrune updates (according to itself) but if there's value in keeping the symbols going forward, I'm happy to start adding them in. The WPN site has offical .png files back to Khaldheim as a start. -- RivalRowan (talk) 08:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- Unless it's a serious burden to keep this quantity of unused images around, it seems reasonable to me to keep the ones we have but also not make a big push to make it "comprehensive". They were used at one point, the work is already done to upload them, they're there if we need them again, we can add more if we need them. The category serves the purpose of grouping similar images, as categories do, but no need to be comprehensive unless there's a project that wants to use them comprehensively. (e.g. I have no problem with some set pages having a large-scale image and others not.)
- I'll add your tip about the WPN site to the description and simply take away the implication ALL set logos are supposed to be uploaded/they must be cleared once keyruned, since that's how it currently seems to be used.
- Otherwise, maybe someone with more knowledge of the technical load storing extra images impose should give a recommendation. - jerodast (talk) 22:22, 15 August 2025 (UTC)
