Bertrand Lestrée is a French former professional player and inaugural National Champion. One of the game's early stars, Lestrée was a pre-tournament favorite to win the first ever Worlds, the 1994 World Championship, but lost to Zak Dolan in the final.[1] At the first ever Pro Tour, Pro Tour New York, he reached the final, where he lost to Michael Loconto.

History

At the 1995 French National Championships Lestrée was disqualified, after making the Top 16, due to having a "disagreement" with a Judge.[2] This was a point of contention for some people in regards to his participation at 1996 Pro Tour New York. There was a view that Wizards of the Coast, by inviting him to the inaugural event in their new flagship tournament series, were condoning his previous behaviour.

Lestrée was able to compete at the 1996 United Kingdom and Ireland National Championships on the basis of his residence in Surrey, England, at the time. Again he finished in the Top 16, missing the Top 8 cut due to breakers.
