The Badlands are a region in North Aerona, part of the Domains of Dominaria.

Description

The Badlands lie east of a jagged sierra and northwest of some plateaus. They are almost two different lands: tall spires, ridges, and mesas, all riven in a thousand places by ravines, gulleys, and arroyos, some a mile wide, some too narrow for a horse to pass. Directly before these ridges and ravines is a single valley a half-mile wide, but splitting off it are scores of wide and narrow exits. The upper reaches are some sixty or seventy feet high. There is no point in climbing, unless one wants to see more badlands, for some tops are only big enough for an eagle's nest while others are razor-sharp knifebacks. Some mesas are perhaps a quarter-mile square, but isolated from their neighbors, so one would climb up only to climb down again. An army must thread the ravines, the gulleys, and the rills. Wagons would find the terrain impassable, as there is no flat ground wider than a tabletop. Everywhere the land tilts and slopes, up and down and up again, often cracked deep enough to trap a leg, all littered with rocks, from skull-size to barn-size. The rocks are mostly limestone and feldspar and quartz.[1]

The Badlands are not devoid of life, however. Water exists in small pools and tiny freshets, laced with lead and alkalai, but potable. Greenery too exists in the form of scrub oaks and chestnuts and yellow grass growing in cracks and on narrow shelves. Jackdaws sleep in nests on the ledges, prairie dogs hide underground, and hawks and vultures soar quietly in the sky.[1]

History

The Badlands were the kingdom of the wizard Haakon the First, self-proclaimed King of the Badlands until he was defeated and his fortress destroyed by Gull and Greensleeves' army.[1]

Speculation

The Badlands are likely the unnamed region between Hammerheim and the plains of Muronia and Wrenna on the map of Aerona.
