The defense symbol (in this case, with a numeric value 3)

Defense is a characteristic of a battle card, as introduced in March of the Machine.[1] It is tracked through defense counters.

Description

Each battle enters the battlefield with a number of defense counters on it equal to its defense, found in the lower right corner of the front face. This tells you how much damage it takes to defeat a battle.

Rules

From the Comprehensive Rules (June 7, 2024—Modern Horizons 3)

  • 210. Defense
    • 210.1. Each battle card has a defense number printed in its lower right corner. This indicates its defense while it’s not on the battlefield, and it also indicates that the battle enters the battlefield with that many defense counters on it (see rule 310.4b).
