An utility card is a card with a basic simple effect. They fill a universal function and can be done in every set.[1]
Mark Rosewater defines an utility card as a card that serves a singular basic evergreen function, as opposed to a "build-around card".[2][3]
Examples
- Bounce effects (e.g. Unsummon)
- Counterspell (e.g. Counterspell)
- Creature removal (e.g. Murder)
- Damage dealing effects (e.g. Shock)
- Enchantment and artifact removal (e.g. Naturalize)
- Protection effects
- Power/toughness effects (e.g. Giant Growth)
- Mana dorks (e.g. Birds of Paradise)
- Land fetching effects
