Enter the Battlefield – Life on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour is a two hour feature-length documentary that follows seven Magic: The Gathering players through a Pro Tour season: Reid Duke, Owen Turtenwald, William Jensen, Patrick Chapin, Shahar Shenhar, Melissa DeTora, and Chris Pikula. While their goal for every game is to defeat their opponent, their lives on the Pro Tour are about personal goals. More than anyone, they compete with themselves. The documentary was released on Nerflix and Youtube on April 26, 2016.[1][2] It was written, produced, and directed by Shawn Kornhauser and Nathan Holt, and narrated by Wil Wheaton.
Description
Each player has a slightly different path to the year's end, and has a slightly different goal. Some just want to be "the best;" Pikula wants to be inducted into the Pro Tour Hall of Fame; Shenhar is out to prove his success isn't just "little-kid luck;" and Chapin just wants to win the World Championship.[3]
Nathan Holt is a Philadelphia-based producer, writer, actor, and comedian. With a background in theater, Holt has starred in productions by such companies as The Walnut Street Theatre, The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, Brat Productions, and many more. Short film credits include Maybe Pittsburgh, Poe Unearthed, and The Cat People of Venice. He is the author of two dramatic plays: Like, You're My Friend and All and Take Care Ted, both produced at the Capital Fringe Festival in Washington, D.C.
Shawn Kornhauser has been making films and videos since 2002. His main focus has been creating documentary films profiling the various folk musicians and outsider artists he has met while living in Philadelphia, his home for the past ten years.
Kornhauser started covering the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour in 2011 when he and his video partner, Holt, produced a short video covering Pro Tour Philadelphia, a project that eventually led to the production of the Magic web series, Walking the Planes, which began in early 2012. Enter the Battlefield marks Holt and Kornhauser’s first full-length feature documentary.
