Commit a crime is a keyword action introduced in Outlaws of Thunder Junction.[1]

Description

Whenever you cast a spell or activate an ability that targets an opponent, or their stuff (spells, permanents, hand, library or graveyard) you are "committing a crime. Untargeted removal is not a crime, however technically not-harmful targeted effects (like healing or putting counters) are.[2]

Commit a crime was designed to be backwards compatible.[3] Cards may reward or punish you for committing a crime.

Example

Example

Duelist of the Mind {1}{U}
Creature — Human Advisor
*/3
Flying, vigilance
Duelist of the Mind’s power is equal to the number of cards you’ve drawn this turn.
Whenever you commit a crime, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card. This ability triggers only once each turn.
