Phyrexian hybrid mana is — as the name implies — hybrid mana and Phyrexian mana at the same time. It can be paid in three different ways, by paying either one of the two colors or 2 life. It was introduced in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty on Tamiyo, Compleated Sage.[1]

Description

Compleation is the process by which one becomes Phyrexian. So far, all spells that have Phyrexian hybrid mana are planeswalkers that also have the compleated keyword ability.

While Phyrexian mana has been known as difficult to balance, its tie with compleated solves several of its problems.

History

Tamiyo, Compleated Sage debuted hybrid Phyrexian mana along with the compleated keyword ability. Paying life allows you cast Tamiyo perhaps a turn sooner, but she'll enter with two fewer loyalty counters. It was next used with Ajani, Sleeper Agent.

  • 107.4f Phyrexian mana symbols are colored mana symbols: {W/P} is white, {U/P} is blue, {B/P} is black, {R/P} is red, and {G/P} is green. A Phyrexian mana symbol represents a cost that can be paid either with one mana of its color or by paying 2 life. There are also ten hybrid Phyrexian mana symbols. A hybrid Phyrexian mana symbol represents a cost that can be paid with one mana of either of its component colors or by paying 2 life. A hybrid Phyrexian mana symbol is both of its component colors.

Example: {W/P}{W/P} can be paid by spending {W}{W}, by spending {W} and paying 2 life, or by paying 4 life.

  • 107.4g In rules text, the Phyrexian symbol {P} with no colored background means any of the fifteen Phyrexian mana symbols.

Rulings

  • You choose whether to pay colored mana or 2 life as you begin to cast the spell, at the same time you would choose modes or a value for X in a spell.
  • A hybrid Phyrexian mana symbol is counted the same way as a normal mana symbol when determining the mana value of a card. Specifically, Tamiyo's mana value is always 5, even if you pay {2}{G}{U} and 2 life to cast her.
  • Phyrexian is not a color nor a type of mana, and players cannot add Phyrexian mana. It's just a symbol that gives you another way to pay for a spell or ability.
