Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana is the fourth set in the Duel Decks series. It was released on October 30, 2009, with an MSRP of US$19.99.[1]
Garruk vs. Liliana contains two preconstructed theme decks, one centered around Garruk Wildspeaker and the other around Liliana Vess. Like Jace vs. Chandra, Garruk vs. Liliana depicts the rivalry of two planeswalkers and is largely a flavor-based theme deck.
Description
Garruk vs. Liliana features two cards with alternate art and holographic foil treatment; Garruk Wildspeaker and Liliana Vess.[1] Furthermore, the set includes another four cards with alternate art; Blastoderm, Harmonize, Mutilate, and Snuff Out.
In addition to this, the Duel Deck contains a Magic "learn to play" guide, a strategy insert, and three creature tokens. The creature tokens are:
- 3/3 Beast, produced by Garruk Wildspeaker
- 4/4 Beast, produced by Beast Attack
- 3/3 Elephant, produced by Elephant Guide
Background
Garruk vs. Liliana is loosely based on the webcomic The Hunter and the Veil,[2] in which Garruk attempts to stop Liliana from obtaining a dangerous artifact known as the Veil. Garruk summons beasts to fight for him, whist Liliana uses her necromantic powers, eventually obtaining the Veil and cursing Garruk with its powers before planeswalking away.[3][4]
The story was meant to continue in a planeswalker novel named The Curse of the Chain Veil; but, it was never published. A webcomic called The Veil's Curse, however, shows Garruk attacking Jace Beleren in an attempt to find Liliana,[5] and Liliana deciding to use the Veil's power to kill some demons to whom she is indebted.[6][7][8]
