The Jeskai Revealed

One of the five Clans of Tarkir, the Jeskai Way admires the ancient dragons' aspect of cunning. The dragon's eye is their symbol. [1] Their color wedge is {U} blue (the focus color), {R} red and {W} white. [2] [3]

Description

The Jeskai Way is a clan of martial artists, mystics and monks. The clan focuses on strategy over strength, planning battles against the other clans from their remote monasteries in misty mountain lakes.[4] The basis of the Jeskai culture are isolated mountain strongholds, each with its own mystical styles and schools of thought. The prime stronghold is Sage-Eye Stronghold.[5]

In Tarkir's altered timeline, the ancient Jeskai khan Shu Yun attempted a last ditch effort at survival by summoning the four other khans of Tarkir to the stronghold, where they would devise a strategy to destroy the dragons. Unbeknownst to the other leaders, the Sultai khan Tasigur had betrayed them to the broods of Silumgar and Ojutai. The ensuing battle ended with the utter subjugation of the Jeskai, the murder of Shu Yun, the execution of all ghostfire warriors, and destruction of all Jeskai historical records. However, Shu Yun's personal scroll of the day's events survived, hidden away from the dragon. [6]

Mechanics

Jeskai cards feature a mechanic that keeps opponents second-guessing and unsure of what you are planning. [4] This is Prowess, a triggered keyword that grants certain creatures +1/+1 until end of turn for each non-creature spell its controller casts. [7]

Khans

Both timelines

Khan Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest lived 1,280 years ago. His relatively youthful appearance belies the fact that he is among the oldest people on Tarkir. Shu Yun is an extremely skilled fighter, having mastered every form of combat known to the Jeskai, and he bears the dragon mark of a ghostfire warrior. He is dedicated to improving the combat skills of every member of the clan. Within the catacombs of the Ojutai, Shu Yun and his disciples collect secret knowledge. They seek to preserve this knowledge for Tarkir's future, no matter what fate that future holds. This knowledge was later used by a future Khan named Narset to learn of Ugin's necessity to Tarkir. In the new timeline, Shun Yun attempted to hold a meeting for the khans in order to deal with the dragons, but this failed as the beasts attacked, forcing the Jeskai to surrender. In order to preserve his clan's existence, Shun Yun forfeited his life, resulting in Ojutai callously freezing him to death. [6]

Old timeline

Khan Narset is a master martial artist, sage and scholar. She has a great destiny on Tarkir. She seems to be afflicted by either a minor form of ADHD or wanderlust as even now she finds it hard to concentrate on a single matter. She has also "seen" imaginary worlds in her childhood that seem to be coming back in visions while she meditates. This could be an allusion to the possibility of her possessing an unignited planeswalker's spark. She slightly resents the rigidness of the Jeskai Way but forces herself to fulfill her duties as Khan. Narset also seems to have some friction with the Jeskai elders who have plans and agendas of their own while seeking to make her a puppet leader and conducting operations behind her back (sending assassins after the rogue monk Taigam, her former pupil). Even her bodyguard, Shintan is seen to be more loyal to the elders than her and reports on her actions to them.

Narset is also fascinated by the dragons of the past and of Ugin in particular. She hopes to find a way to use Ugin's runes to somehow stop the bloodshed on Tarkir.

Near the end of the old timeline, Narset was approached by a Kirin which guided her to a suffering Sarkhan Vol. She could sense the echo of Ugin's spirit around Sarkhan. Sarkhan eventually told her of the secrets of planeswalkers and the existence of Nicol Bolas. She confided in him that Ugin was Tarkir's soul and with his death the plane was thrown out of balance. She helped to calm his mind and provide him some peace before agreeing to bring him to Ugin's Tomb. At the tomb they were attacked by a maddened Zurgo Helmsmasher who attempted to kill Sarkhan. Narset fought off Zurgo and injured him before urging Sarkhan to enter Ugin's Nexus, promising to guard his passage. At the apex of their fight, she was distracted by Sarkhan which enabled Zurgo to land a killing blow. With the last of her strength, she urged Sarkhan to keep moving into the nexus.

Sarkhan Vol swore revenge against Zurgo as the orc stood over her body and he made his way into the center of Ugin's Nexus and possibly a way to save Narset by changing time itself.

The Jeskai Way is loosely based on the Chinese Shaolin Monks. [8]
