Wolf

Wolves are a type of mundane canine that exists in many different worlds. They are related to dogs and jackals. Humans with the ability to change into wolves are known as werewolves or lycanthropes.

The first creature to bear the type was Timber Wolves in Legends. Wolves appear in all colors except blue.

Wolves on different planes

Aside from Kamigawa, wolves have been found in essentially every existing plane in some form or another.

Ulgothra

The Heart Wolf is a type of wolf native to Ulgrotha. They are the standard riding mounts of goblin sub-chiefs, dignitaries and ambassadors, and dwarven traders as well. Heartwolves make fine riding beasts for these smaller folk, and are adept at travelling quickly across difficult ground.

Mirrodin

The wolves of Mirrodin were an exceptionally unusual breed, being longer-lived than the elves, as wise as the leonin, as sapient as unaltered vedalken, and as rare as a fully organic creature in that world. Like all mirran animals, they were completed, the last wolves in Mirrodin (now New Phyrexia) being like the Rot Wolf.

Innistrad

The Kessig Wolf Run is the homeland of Wolves and Werewolves alike. Howlpack Alpha and Immerwolf are Wolf Lords.

After Avacyn was released from the Helvault, she cast a spell that granted the werewolves a choice to either remain a werewolf or to fuse the two spirits in itself (human spirit and beastial wolf spirit), giving it a permanent wolf form but granting an inner-peace. This spell is called the cursemute, and also stifled Garruk's curse for awhile. These humanoid wolves became known as wolfir, and are allies of Avacyn.

Ravnica

The Elven Wolf-riders of Selesnya apprentice from a young age. Each rider raises a wolf pup from birth to serve as a mount, hoping that one day the two will share the honor of guarding the Great Concourse.

Throat Wolf

Throat Wolf is a non-existent card. Shortly after the release of the first large expansion set, Legends, a couple of players on usenet decided to pull a prank and start rumors about this card. Since this was before the ubiquity of the Internet, many players didn't have access to full card lists and spoiler lists, and so had no way of knowing whether this card was real or not. Later, the term was used in a variety of in-jokes, and Magic developers occasionally use it as a temporary name for a card in development.

Various versions circulate on the internet, many with really obscure or rule-technically impossible rules text. The main ability that seems consistently attributed to the throat wolf is effectively 'double first strike' or 'firstest strike', worded in various ways.

In an article in the Duelist #9, Throat Wolf was described as 5 colorless mana for a 4/4 Summon Throat Wolf. The abilities read, "Firstest Strike. Throat Wolf may attack during your opponent's untap phase. Attacking does not cause Throat Wolf to tap." The flavor text read "The most feared of Dominia's mythical creatures, the Throat Wolf is wylie and unpredictable. Its incredible speed and attack abilities have prompted many net.wizards to wonder if it is real. Ask the Throat Wolf, he'll tell you..."

In the short story Chef's Surprise by Sonia Orin Lyris in the Magic: The Gathering anthology Distant Planes, the main character, Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar, works as a chef for the demon Vincent, Lord of the Pit. All of the meals she cooks for him are actual cards from the game (for example, atog pâté on honey-soaked ironroot bark; Atog and Ironroot Treefolk are both creature cards) except one: Barbequed Throat Wolf ribs.
