Planechase (2009) is a supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering multiplayer games. The set introduced the Planechase format and the associated oversized plane cards. The set was released on September 4th, 2009, with release events held on September 4-6.

Contents

Planechase (2009) consists of four "game packs", each containing ten oversized plane cards, a 60-card deck, a six-sided planar die and a strategy insert with multiplayer rules. The MSRP for an individual pack is $19.99. [2]

The plane cards represent specific locations on planes in the Magic storyline, introducing "a groundbreaking new way to experience planeswalking". The theme decks are tournament legal and each contains eight rares. Additionally, there was a different preview card from the upcoming Zendikar set in each of the four decks (Beast Hunt, Hideous End, Kor Sanctifiers and Whiplash Trap).

The planar die

Planechase (2009) introduced a new casual game variant of the same name, which simulates traveling between different planes using the new plane cards. The set comes with a six-sided planar die, that features the planeswalker symbol {PW} on one face, the chaos symbol {CHAOS} on another and four blank faces. [3]

Each player enters the game with a regular deck and a planar deck, which features ten or more of the new plane cards. The first player to start puts the first card in his planar deck face-up in the command zone. A plane card usually has two abilities. The first one applies as long as the card is revealed, the second one is the so called chaos ability.

During each player's turn, that player may roll the planar die whenever he or she could cast a sorcery. While the first roll each turn is free, all subsequent rolls in that turn cost {1} more than the last. [4] If the {PW} is rolled, the owner of the current face-up plane card puts it on the bottom of his planar deck and the current player reveals the top card of his or her planar deck. If {CHAOS} is rolled the chaos ability of the plane card triggers. With blank faces, nothing happens.

Each of the four Planechase decks contains ten unique Plane cards only available in that deck. Additionally, a special Plane card entitled Tazeem from the plane Zendikar was given out at the release event.[5]
