"Mad Genius" Erik Lauer is a former Magic: The Gathering player and notable deck designer.[1] He was invited to become part of Magic R&D by his former teammate Randy Buehler, then Director of Magic. Later he became head developer as a counterpart to the head designer Mark Rosewater.

Erik retired from Wizards of the Coast in January 2024. At the time of his retirement, Mark Rosewater considered him to have been in the top 10 people who most influenced Magic design.[2]
