Minamo was a major blue-aligned location on Kamigawa. A wizard academy built around and above the lake Kamitaki near waterfalls of the same name was composed from buildings both standard and held magically aloft. It was the first place where the kami manifested during the outbreak of the Kami War. Above the Minamo Academy was located the soratami capital Otawara (Oboro), and the moonfolk were visiting the academy frequently - officialy to share their wisdom, actually to maintain control of the academy when using it an pursuing their own secret agenda.

The Minamo Academy trained both archers and mages for the conflict between material and spirit world. The headmaster of the academy was sensei Iki Hisoka, his deputy was madame Azami, the Lady of Scrolls.

During the events leading to the climax of the Kami War, Choryu, a Minamo student, friend of princess Michiko, made a grave mistake when he killed Kobo, an apprentice of Hidetsugu the o-bakemono, member of the hyozan reckoners. Obedient to the hyozan oath, the ogre pursued to execute a complete reckoning for that crime - and that included destroying Minamo and killing pretty much everybody there. The ogre attacked the academy with his yamabushi hunters, defeated the guardian dragon Keiga, the Tide Star and destroyed the academy, killing anybody who got in their way. Some of the inhabitants escaped this dreadful fate, but Hisoka himself was decapitated by Hidetsugu.
