Spiritcraft is the unofficial name of a mechanic utilized on cards from the Kamigawa block that have triggered effects whenever a spirit or arcane spell is played. It has been noted by Wizards that they wish it had been used officially as an ability word.[1]

In Betrayers of Kamigawa, many spiritcraft abilities created ki counters.

Examples

The text in brackets is not on the card itself, but is used to denote where the ability word would have been placed.

Example

Thief of Hope {2}{B}
Creature — Spirit
2/2
[Spiritcraft — ] Whenever you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell, target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
Soulshift 2 (When this creature dies, you may return target Spirit card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your graveyard to your hand.)
