Standard, formerly known as Type 2, is a rotating constructed format. [1] [2]

Description

Constructed decks must contain a minimum of sixty cards. There is no maximum deck size; however, you must be able to shuffle your deck with no assistance. If a player wishes to use a sideboard, it may contain up to fifteen cards.

With the exception of basic land cards, a player's combined deck and sideboard may not contain more than four of any individual card, counted by its English card title equivalent.[3]

Rotation

Standard allows for all cards in the newest two story-based blocks and the newest Core Set to be played, save for cards on the Standard Banned List.

After Magic 2015, core sets will be discontinued and blocks will only contain two sets, usually one large and one small. The first set of each block (the fall and spring sets) will cause a rotation, starting with the spring 2016 block; as a special case, Khans of Tarkir will rotate out with Fate Reforged, but Dragons of Tarkir will stay in Standard until it rotates out with Magic 2015. Three blocks will be in Standard at one time so that it will not substantially change how many unique cards are in the Standard card pool at a given time, though the number of sets will vary less (always five or six, compared to the current five to eight).[4]

Current Rotation

These are the sets that are legal in the Standard format as of January 22, 2014[3]:

Banned list

As of July 30, 2012, there are no banned cards in the current Standard environment.[5]

Previously banned cards in Standard

The following is a list of cards that have been banned at one point during their stay in the Standard environment. Banned cards, by default, are unbanned when the respective set is no longer legal in respective standard format. For example Darksteel Citadel was banned in Mirrodin Standard, but not when reprinted in Magic 2015.
