Talk:Ixalan
Pronunciation
The pronunciation is currently documented as “IXS-a-lon”, which is how Mark Rosewater described it, but “XS” doesn't actually make sense in any common phonetic alphabet. An attempt at fixing it was reverted as “See source”. I think that we shouldn't include obvious nonsense in our wiki just because a WotC employee said it. Instead, I propose transcribing the name as pronounced at the start of this video in IPA, which would be [ˈɪksəɫɑːn]. —Fenhl 04:15, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- I think that's what Maro meant. Here are two more asks where he denies that the "x" should be pronounced as /ʃ/. --Corveroth (talk) 18:30, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- It is obviously more a pronunciation help, and not a proper phonetic transscription. I usually found Maro's explanations more helpful than IPA, simply because I can read it.
- In this case I have to say that a you can't really call something a fix which is just simply wrong citation. But we shoudl probably add a [sic] to make clear that this is how it was presented. - Yandere Sliver 23:54, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- Please provide a reference for your unreadable thingy. I feel you're completely ignoring the current discussion and the previous "native pronunciation" discussion by removing the references --Hunter (talk) 11:32, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- The "unreadable thingy" is the standard representation of its pronunciation. Its reference is the video, although I grant that there is no external transcription into IPA cited. I would be happy to restore Maro's pronunciation, but it has the glaring flaw of being a circular definition: it leaves the "x" undefined. --Corveroth (talk) 15:30, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was exaggerating. Point is that most people can't read it, and that the original references were added because the pronunciation was debated (and in fact contested on this site as well). You said it yourself, that Maro's explanations are more helpful. Also, there was a discussion going on, and now it has been changed and deleted without consensus, which is kind of rude. Enough said, I'll move on to other pages now. --Hunter (talk) 17:59, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
