Last strike is a theoretical static ability which has been discussed by R&D, but has never been printed. Mark Rosewater tried to put Last Strike into Future Sight on a future-shifted card and was stopped by the Magic rules Manager at the time, Mark Gottlieb,[1][2][3][4] due to rule rewriting issues.[3]
Description
Last strike means it happens after normal damage,[5] just the opposite of First strike.[3] It is flavorful downside[6] but it is not clear in what color would it be.[7] The problem with this mechanic is that it adds more complexity and it needs a great work on the rules.[8][9] Back during Future Sight set design, it was not worth the rules rewriting it would require just to create one or two cards.[2]
Mark Rosewater created it to allow the Triple strike mechanic be a thing.[3][6] He knows that are some tricky ways to circumvent the rules to make Last strike work, but he wants that these ways also make Triple strike work.[10][11]
Despite the concerns, Mark Rosewater still hopes to use the mechanic in a future set.[12]
