  • Dwarven Armorer was the first creature to produce a +0/+1 or a +1/+0 counter.

Ice Age

Homelands

  • Coral Reef is the first enchantment to produce +0/+1 counters. It also uses polyp counters.
  • Scars of the Veteran from Alliances is like Sacred Boon from Ice Age except Scars of the Veteran can put up to seven +0/+1 counters on a creature for each point of damage prevented.

Mirage

  • Frankenstein's Monster from Dark is the first and only creature to come into play with +2/+0, +1/+1 and/or +0/+2 counters.

  • Dwarven Armorer is the first creature to produce a +0/+1 or a +1/+0 counter.

  • Balduvian Hydra is the first Hydra to use +1/+0 counters. All further Hydras use +1/+0 counters.

  • Fungusaur, Rock Hydra and Sengir Vampire from Alpha were the first cards to use +1/+1 counters. Of all cards that use +1/+1 counters, Sengir Vampire has been printed in the most sets (10).

  • Predatory Hunger
  • Spike Cannibal is the first creature that when it comes into play, move all +1/+1 counters from all creatures onto it. Cannibal doesn't care who or how the other +1/+1 counters were created - meaning not just spike created counters.
  • Spike Hatcher, Spike Rogue and Spike Weaver all can move their +1/+1 counters to another creature and have a second ability dealing with their +1/+1 counters.
  • Thopter Squadron is similar to Anitiquities' Tetravus, but it has a mana cost to move turn its counters into tokens and back into counters.
  • Workhorse is the first artifact creature that could remove its +1/+1 counters to add {1} to its controller's mana pool.

Urza's Saga

  • Anthroplasm is the first creature that could change the number of +1/+1 counters it had on itself by paying X amount, and tapping, which would replace the current number with X +1/+1 counters.
  • Molten Hydra is the first creature that could add a +1/+1 counter to itself by paying {1}{R}{R}.
  • Phyrexian Broodlings

Urza's Destiny

  • Extruder is the first artifact creature that could sacrifice an artifact to put a +1/+1 counter on any creature.
  • Hunting Moa is the first creature that when it comes into play and is put into a graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.

Nemesis

  • Mossdog is the first creature that when it is the target of a spell or ability of an opponent, it gets a +1/+1 counter.

Prophecy

  • Copper-Leaf Angel is the first creature that can sacrifice lands to get +1/+1 counters.
  • Forgotten Harvest is the first enchantment non-aura that could remove lands from a graveyard to put +1/+1 counters on target creature. (The above two cards are a good combination, sac the land, then remove it from game for 2 +1/+1 counters).
  • Thrive is the first sorcery that could produce X +1/+1 counters.

Invasion

In Invasion, +1/+1 counters are only generated if the kicker cost was paid on certain creatures.

Planeshift

  • Arctic Merfolk gets a +1/+1 counter if the kicker cost was paid.
  • Phyrexian Scuta gets two +1/+1 counters if the kicker cost was paid.
  • Dralnu's Pet gets X +1/+1 counters if the kicker cost was paid where X is equal to the discarded card's converted mana cost.
  • Quirion Dryad gets a +1/+1 counter whenever its controller plays a white, blue, black or red spell.

Apocalypse

  • Dodecapod comes into play with two +1/+1 counters if a spell or an ability of an opponent forces you to discard it from your hand.
  • Emblazoned Golem gets X +1/+1 counters if its {X} kicker cost was paid.
  • Spiritmonger gets a +1/+1 counter whenever it deals damage to another creature.
Volver Cycle

This cycle of creatures can get one, two or three +1/+1 counters depending upon how much of their kicker cost was paid.

  • Anavolver gets a +1/+1 counter if its {B} kicker cost was paid and/or it gets two +1/+1 counters if its {1}{U} kicker cost was paid.
  • Cetavolver gets a +1/+1 counter if its {G} kicker cost was paid and/or it gets two +1/+1 counters if its {1}{R} kicker cost was paid.
  • Degavolver gets a +1/+1 counter if its {R} kicker cost was paid and/or it gets two +1/+1 counters if its {1}{B} kicker cost was paid.
  • Necravolver gets a +1/+1 counter if its {W} kicker cost was paid and/or it gets two +1/+1 counters if its {1}{G} kicker cost was paid.
  • Rakavolver gets a +1/+1 counter if its {U} kicker cost was paid and/or it gets two +1/+1 counters if its {1}{W} kicker cost was paid.

Odyssey

Torment

  • Crazed Firecat is the first creature that gets +1/+1 counters for each successful coin flip upon its coming into play.
  • Nantuko Cultivator is the first creature that gets +1/+1 counters based on the number of land cards that are discarded when it comes into play.

Judgment

  • Forcemage Advocate is the first creature that can put a +1/+1 counter on target creature by first tapping and returning target card from an opponent's graveyard to their hand.
  • Ironshell Beetle puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature when it comes into play.
Phantom creatures

Phantom creatures come into play with a certain amount of +1/+1 counters. When they are dealt damage, prevent it. Remove a +1/+1 counter.

Onslaught

  • Elvish Vanguard is the first creature that gets +1/+1 counters when a specific creature type (Elves) come into play.
  • Entrails Feaster is the first creature that tapped if it didn't remove a creature from the game, if it removed a creature it received a +1/+1 counter.
  • Invigorating Boon is the first enchantment that put a +1/+1 counter on target creature whenever a card was cycled.
  • Menacing Oger comes into play with two +1/+1 counters if when it comes into play each player chooses a number and if you are one of the people with the highest number.
  • Stag Beetle is the first creature that gets +1/+1 counters based on the number of other creatures in play.

Legions

The following cards have the keyword Amplify X, which gives them X +1/+1 counters for each card revealed from your hand that shares a creature type with that card.

Scourge

  • Aven Farseer is the first creature to get a +1/+1 counter whenever a creature is turned faceup (i.e. morph).
  • Carrion Feeder gained a +1/+1 counter if a creature was sacrificed.
  • Consumtive Goo — For {2}{B}{B} target creature gets -1/-1 until end of turn and put a +1/+1 counter on Consumtive Goo.
  • Degree of Savagery puts 4 +1/+1 counters on each creature you own. It is the first instant that when cycled puts 4 +1/+1 counters on a creature.
  • Forgotten Ancient is the first creature that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever a player plays a spell. At the beginning of the owner’s upkeep, they may move any number of +1/+1 counters from Forgotten Ancient onto other creatures.
  • Kurgadon is the first creature that received 3 +1/+1 counters whenever its owner plays a spell with converted mana cost of 6 or more (which Scourge had many of).
  • Unspeakable Symbol is the first enchantment where you pay 3 life to put a +1/+1 counter on target creature.

  • Frankenstein's Monster from Dark is the first and only creature to come into play with +2/+0, +1/+1 and/or +0/+2 counters.

  • Serrated Biskelion is the first artifact creature to produce -1/-1 counters.

  • Ebon Praetor from Fallen Empires is the first creature that could receive a -2/-2 counter for not doing something. If you did do it instead it received a +1/+0 counter.

  • Originally, Cyclone used chips. It was given errata to call them age counters. As the card was originally written, its ability was a precursor to cumulative upkeep and it was given errata with the ability using the age counters.

Arrowhead counter

  • Originally, Osai Vultures from Legends used counters. It was given errata to use Carrion counters. It is the first creature to use carrion counters.

  • Traveling Plague is the first enchantment to use plague counters. It produces plague counters automatically at the beginning of your upkeep.

  • Withering Hex produces plague counters whenever a player cycles a card.

  • Corrosion from Visions is the first enchantment to use rust counters. It also uses age counters because it has cumulative upkeep.
