Conspiracy: The Empty Throne is a booster-based set designed for Conspiracy Draft.[1] It is the third supplemental set that is to be released in the summer of 2016.[2]

Set details

“  The King Is Dead, Long Live the King  ”

Conspiracy: The Empty Throne follows up on the original Conspiracy set from 2014 and will introduce new cards that affect the draft itself as well as new Conspiracies. It is designed for eight-player drafts followed by free-for-all games of three to five players each. The set contains 220 cards (10 more than Conspiracy). Some are new cards with mechanics that enhance multiplayer play, and the other part features reprint.

The set will be printed in English, Japanese and Chinese Simplified. It will not be released on Magic Online.

Flavor

Brago, the King Eternal ruled the High City of Paliano on the plane of Fiora. Only three years after he had ascended to the throne, he was diagnosed with a hereditary and incurable disease. The priesthood — or Custodi — started giving treatments to prolong his life but extended themselves too far. His body deteriorated, but he couldn't die. Thinking it an act of mercy, Brago's good friend Selvala ended his suffering with a dagger through his heart. However, this only released his spirit from the body. The Custodi knew that they would lose power through the succession. So they kept Brago’s spirit as a figurehead and were able to retain their command.

However, his spirit was killed. The throne is empty and chaos reigns.

The logo of the February 22 announcement

The set was initially announced as Conspiracy: The Reign of Brago.[3] However, the day immediately after the initial set announcement, official twitter announced The Reign of Brago would not be the set name, along with a picture showing apparent assassination of Brago.[4] The set was renamed on February 24 to The Empty Throne to reflect the plot twist.[1] Also the number of cards was reduced from 221 to 220 too (Brago is dead, so clearly there's one less card) and the quote was changed from “Long May He Reign” to “The King Is Dead, Long Live the King”.
