Painlands is the nickname for the lands first printed in Ice Age (set) and Apocalypse (set) that provide two different colors of mana, but you take a point of "pain" damage everytime you tap them for a color. They are as follows:
- Adarkar Wastes (white/blue)
- Brushland (white/green)
- Karplusan Forest (red/green)
- Sulfurous Springs (black/red)
- Underground River (blue/black)
- Battlefield Forge (white/red)
- Caves of Koilos (white/black)
- Llanowar Wastes (black/green)
- Shivan Reef (blue/red)
- Yavimaya Coast (blue/green)
The lands providing allied colors are originally in Ice Age; those providing enemy colors from Apocalypse. The former were reprinted in Fifth Edition, Sixth Edition, and Seventh Edition, and all ten were printed in Ninth Edition.
There are also a set of five lesser-known painlands from Tempest. They were enemy coloured, and came into play tapped, making them strictly worse than the painlands of Apocalypse. They are as follows:
- Salt Flats (white/black)
- Pine Barrens (black/green)
- Skyshroud Forest (green/blue)
- Caldera Lake (blue/red)
- Scabland (red/white)
In Mirrodin, 5 talisman artifacts were printed that resemble the original painlands from Ice Age. They are:
- Talisman of Dominance - like Underground River
- Talisman of Impulse - like Karplusan Forest
- Talisman of Indulgence - like Sulfurous Springs
- Talisman of Progress - like Adarkar Wastes
- Talisman of Unity - like Brushland
