Venom (or Basilisk) is a slang term for an ability that is similar to deathtouch and appears on many older cards. It is named after the card Venom from The Dark.

Description

The latest rule from Oracle:

  • whenever (this creature) blocks or becomes blocked by (opposing creature), destroy (that creature) (at the end of combat)
  • whenever (this creature) deals (combat) damage to a creature, destroy (that creature) (at the end of combat)

Venom applies only to combat damage, while deathtouch applies to any damage dealt to a creature. Some creatures with venom only destroy certain colors or types of opposing creatures.
