The tombstone icon, or tombstone symbol, was first introduced in Odyssey where it was featured on cards with flashback. With Torment it was revealed to be a designator to indicate a card that is playable out of the graveyard, instead of only flashback. [1] The tombstone symbol ended up being an Odyssey block only thing. The graveyard was so important in this block that Magic R&D felt they needed a symbol to make players' lives easier. However, they decided not to do it on an ongoing basis.[2]
The tombstone icon had a short revival with Valor and Call of the Herd in the Time Spiral set, as timeshifted cards, and was also featured on graveyard-active cards such as Ichorid[3] and the Incarnations of Judgment (e.g., Anger).[4]
