Magic variant formats are forms of Magic with alternate, variant rules.

Notable Magic variant formats

Mental Magic is a variant in which cards in a player's hand may be considered another card with the same mana cost (including color) when played.

This is an unofficial format often played at Magic Online. Players of this variant format are considered to be playing with a handicap by using only common cards; however, when all players in a game are playing this format, the handicap is not as — if at all existent — evident.
