Devoid is a characteristic-defining keyword ability which states that a card is colorless, regardless of the colors in that card's mana cost. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Description

Devoid was introduced in Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi‎, as a preview for Battle for Zendikar‎. [5] Because it is a characteristic-defining ability, cards with devoid are colorless at all times, including when not on the battlefield or outside of the game. However, devoid does not change a card's color identity, which is defined as the combination of all colors indicated on the card.

While functionally colorless, cards with devoid are numbered according to the color of their casting costs.

Rules

From the Comprehensive Rules (June 7, 2024—Modern Horizons 3)

  • 702.114. Devoid
    • 702.114a Devoid is a characteristic-defining ability. “Devoid” means “This object is colorless.” This ability functions everywhere, even outside the game. See rule 604.3.

Rulings

  • Cards with devoid use frames that are variations of the transparent frame traditionally used for Eldrazi. The top part of the card features some color over a background based on the texture of the hedrons that once imprisoned the Eldrazi. This coloration is intended to aid deck building and gameplay. [6]
  • A card with devoid is just colorless. It's not colorless and the colors of mana in its mana cost.
  • Other cards and abilities can give a card with devoid color. If that happens, it's just the new color, not that color and colorless.
  • Devoid works in all zones, not just on the battlefield.
  • If a card loses devoid, it will still be colorless. This is because effects that change an object's color (like the one created by devoid) are considered before the object loses devoid.
