Their primary defense mechanism is to flee while ejecting an ink cloud into the water. Many octopi are known to employe natural camouflage to help elude intruders. They are not to be confused with the closely related nautili, squids or kraken. Octopi are intelligent creatures, but lack the sentience of their humanoid versions the cephalids.

There are only two cards with the creature type Octopus. The first creature to bear the type was Giant Octopus from Portal and Starter 1999, the other one is Lorthos, the Tidemaker from Zendikar.
