A cockatrice. Art by Dan Frazier.

Cockatrice was originally a green creature type that was only used once, for the card Cockatrice in Alpha. Cockatrices are flying creatures that can turn their enemies to stone, much like basilisks. They have lithe, feathery, serpentine bodies with the head of a bird, two legs, and two wings.

In Magic 2014 it finally returned as a black creature (Deadgaze Cockatrice).
