Scarecrows are simple constructs used to keep birds off the crops.

Scarecrows in Shadowmoor

In Shadowmoor scarecrows were created by kithkin cobblesmiths to help them with farming. Over the time some of them got lost or outlived their creators and took a life on their own. Those scarecrows are led by the Reaper King.

The story Ode to Mistmeadow Jack, also mentions scarecrows who were not made to move by themselves, but gained sentience by themselves and, for yet unrevealed reasons, band together.
