The tombstone symbol or tombstone icon was first introduced in Odyssey where it was featured on cards with flashback. With Torment it was revealed to be a designator to indicate a card that is playable out of the graveyard, instead of only flashback. [1] The tombstone symbol ended up being an Odyssey block only thing. The graveyard was so important in Odyssey that Magic R&D felt they needed a symbol to make players' lives easier. However, they decided not to do it on an ongoing basis. [2] [3]
The tombstone icon had a short revival with Valor and Call of the Herd in the Time Spiral/Timeshifted set.
