Wikipedia import
BL4kLotus posted on Reddit this evening. Their pet project, wikipedia:Timeline_of_Magic:_the_Gathering_Standard_(Type_II), has been nominated for deletion there for being excessively detailed and not notable. They'll be working on bringing it over here. We do have Banned_and_restricted_cards/Timeline, but their perspective offers additional information and I think the two can complement each other. --Corveroth (talk) 03:57, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
Right, I'll need some time to get this moved over here and fix some things, like Template:Cite web that don't work here. In addition to a timeline of bans, my timeline also demonstrates which sets were legal on which days in the past, how the total count of the cardpool has changed (which also reveals how WOTC design intentions have changed over time - for instance, total card pool is larger now than ever before in history, and duplicates are fewer) and I also include mention of the top level tournaments that had standard formats and a rough snapshot of the most impactful deck archetypes (based on tournament results). The early history of standard (first year or so) required a fair amount of research too, I hope magic fans find that information interesting... for instance, many people are unaware that cards were restricted instead of banned in the early period, and that the concept for which sets would be included and how rotation would work took a while to settle (Ice Age left standard and then returned to standard).
Please give me a couple months to fix some of the quirks of copying this over from Wikipedia. --BL4kLotus (talk) 04:22, 31 October 2022 (UTC)
