Syphon is a black and red-aligned MTGS user and planeswalker. He used to be part of the Dragons of MTGS, and still spends a lot of time in the form of a dragon as a consequence. Other forms he is seen in are that of a troll and as his original form of a human. Known for his unhinged views, he is reviled by most, but grudgingly respected for his martial and magical prowess, as well as his extensive knowledge of Multiverse lore.

Mortal life

Born somewhere during the reign of the Thran, Syphon was a citizen of Halcyon during the time that Yawgmoth came to power. Early in his adult life, he was banished to Caliman for a crime that he has either has forgotten or never speaks about. Not long after his banishment, the Thran empire fell apart. Without Yawgmoth to cure the inhabitants of Thran settlements on Caliman, spread of Phthisis was left unchecked, leaving his destination, a city in Dakmor Swamp, completely empty. As he was sent to Caliman without means of transport powered by powerstones, Syphon's exposure to the radiation they emanated was limited, leaving him largely unharmed.

Syphon and his fellow exiles, those that were left at least, arrived at the city only to find it completely devoid of life that first day. Efforts to clean up the bodies were to start the next week, but never proceeded. During the first night, wild creatures appeared that slaughtered the exiles. In desperation, various individuals fled into the swamp, only to be swallowed whole by the murky waters. In the face of impending death, as was usual for planeswalkers from before the Mending, Syphon's spark Flared and made him a planeswalker. However, exhausted from his banishment and wounded by the animals, all that the spark did at the time was keep him in a coma, suspended in the dark murky waters for years to come.

In the brief service of the Swamp Queen

When Syphon awoke, he did not know how much time had passed. Barely kept alive by his spark, he spent some time in the murky swamps. Scholars believe that this is the point where this planeswalker developed his insanity, deprived of any and all sensory input for an unknown period of time. Regardless, when the swamp queen Tojira took up residence in the Thran ruins, it did not take long for her to discover what little magic Syphon still instinctively controlled, even though the majority of it had been inert for ages. Wasting no time in having her nightstalker minions retrieve the source of the magical phenomenon, Tojira soon saw the source with her own eyes: a sanity-challenged planeswalker, millennia old. Due to the instinctive use of the magic Syphon still possessed, Tojira was convinced she had found a potent weapon. True to her alignment, she had no qualms about pressing Syphon into service as a living weapon against the unsuspecting inhabitants of Alaborn. His power, despite being uncontrollable, proved to be the weapon that Tojira had been waiting for.

Soon after her discovery Tojira led her army and her new tool, shackled and dragged along by nightstalkers, towards Alaborn. Despite a plethora of dangers taking the lives of many nightstalkers, ranging from wildlife to desintegrating gouts of raw mana escaping from Syphon, the journey continued unabated. At the end of the journey awaited Trokin, Alaborn's proud capital. Tojira's plan was simple: invade the city during their festival to catch the humans off guard. The plans were drawn, the nightstalkers moved into position and Tojira readied her own spells. However, the element of surprise was lost when one of Syphon's uncontrolled outbursts destroyed part of Trokin's city wall. Thus robbed of their initiative, the nightstalker armies were committed and wholesale slaughter ensued, firearms spewing death at both sides. With neither side able to gain an advantage, the attack turned into a siege, lasting a better part of three weeks until invaders of an entirely different kind showed up: The Phyrexians.
