Magic: The Gathering cosplay, is cosplay centered around the game of Magic.

Description

Cosplay, a portmanteau of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character from a certain franchise. The term "cosplay" was coined in Japan in 1984, and has been applied to a wide range of anime, manga, cartoons, comics, television series, and video games. The rapid growth in the number of people cosplaying as a hobby since the 1990s has made the phenomenon a significant aspect of popular culture in Japan and some other parts of Asia and in the Western world.

For Magic, any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation (most often planeswalkers or legendary creatures, but sometimes also just a catching cardface) may be taken up as a subject. It is not unusual to see genders switched.

History

In the context of Magic: the Gathering, cosplay first began te be noted during the 2011 World Championships with the appearance Christine Sprankle costumed as Elspeth, Knight-Errant.
