oracle:"Omen counter"

Omen counters are a type of counter introduced in Prophecy. They act as markers leading up to either an alternate-win condition or the transform mechanic to activate after a certain number of them build up or are removed. This represents the 'Omen' in their name as they lead up to an event happening.

Description

Omen counters first appeared on Celestial Convergence in Prophecy. It acts as a tracker for an alternate-win condition whereas the enchantment enters play with 7 Omen counters on it with 1 removed each Upkeep. When no more counters remain, then the player with the highest life wins the game or it ends in a draw of the players have equal life.

The counters appeared once again in Innistrad: Crimson Vow on Foreboding Statue and Soulcipher Board. In both of these cases, they acted as a marker for the transform mechanic. For Foreboding Statue, it had an ability that added an omen counter to it when activated. It would then transform into Forsaken Thresher after having 3 or more of the counters on it. For Soulcipher Board, it enters play with 3 omen counters on it and one is removed for each card that enters the graveyard. It then transforms into Cipherbound Spirit when all the counters are removed.
