The Resleevables is a video podcast focused on the history of Magic sets hosted by Cedric Phillips and Patrick Sullivan.
History
The podcast began as a long-format audio podcast on the StarCityGames YouTube Channel but has since been reborn as an independent video podcast on its own YouTube Channel. Its current format looks back to the very first sets of Magic: The Gathering that allow the hosts to review each set from its historical perspective in the game.
The original form of the Resleevables covered blocks one set at a time but in no particular order. Originally sticking to set-based facts, it quickly began to expand into work and competition anecdotes, Organized Play at the time, and expanding the awards on cards in each set. The first iteration of the podcast went for 34 episodes before a hiatus in November 2021. It covered most of the blocks between Masques block and Lorwyn–Shadowmoor block. These episodes are now found in podcast sites but have no central host.
The new iteration, restarting February 2023, began from Alpha and went chronologically, and had a stricter format to the episodes. For the March of the Machine and Wilds of Eldraine releases, they dubbed a new subseries "The Presleevables", previewing their mechanics and interesting cards.
With no Pro Tour but still intending to cover major events, the hosts opened up another subseries, "Resleevables: Tournament Edition" to cover the first World Championship in 1994. After a review of the wider context, top players and event itself, it included a full match of the final two decklists.
Content
Each episode reviews the Facts, Lore, Mechanics, Cycles, Misprints and Trivia (often drawn from this wiki) of each set. With the material available in each Pro Tour and how the first few years had none, Organised Play was only covered tangentially and mostly on the Tournament Edition. The hosts recount their experience playing with each new set when they came out. Patrick Sullivan provides his analysis of the game design of each set, leaning on his work experience in the industry. Cedric Phillips is the showrunner and provides the key talking points to drive each episode. Every episode ends with Awards and Grades for the set under review, with categories such as the best card, worst card, role players, weirdest cards, best land art and over- and underestimated cards.
In addition to the set review podcast, an exclusive-to-supportes Q&A podcast accompanies it named "Unsleeved", which some snippets were uploaded to the YouTube site, and also "Tournament Edition", which looks at the knockout rounds of Pro Tour-level events and presents some gameplay.
For March of the Machine and Wilds of Eldraine, Cedric and Patrick considered separate lists of powerful and well-designed cards in each color in "The Presleevables".
