Status Threatened by Calamity Beasts

Bloomburrow is a plane of the Multiverse. It was introduced in the 2024 set of the same name.[1][2] It is Magic's first all-animal plane.[3]

Background

Bloomburrow is a charming pastoral world full of anthropomorphic animals. Like Lorwyn–Shadowmoor, it has no native humans. Interestingly, Planeswalkers who visit the plane do so in animalfolk form.[2] Bloomburrow seems to have been unaffected by New Phyrexia's Invasion of the Multiverse.

Calamity Beasts

Calamity Beasts are huge, earth-shaking elemental predators that bring the change of climate and environment, [2][4] led by Maha, the Night Owl. They wreak disaster on an unprecedented scale while they move through the landscape.

After the Battle of Kell's Ridge and the time of the Order of the Holly Leaf, Valley was largely left untouched by them other than those that brought the changing of the seasons until the events of the Bloomburrow storyline.[5]

The known Calamity Beasts include:

  • Foxes {W}
  • Birds
    • Maha, the Night Owl {B}
    • The Sun Hawk, likely the harbinger of Summer.[5]
  • The Wildfire Wolf[5] {R}
  • Lumra, Bellow of the Woods {G}
  • The Spring Elk, the harbinger of Spring.[5]
  • The Blight Snake[5]
  • The Drought Cat[5]
  • The Flood Gar, a long, silvery-scaled fish with rosy-hued magical markings along its side.[6] Its long mouth holds rows of sharp teeth. It can create whips of water. It attacked Three Trees City around 4564 AR.

History

In Bloomburrow's distant past, the Calamity Beasts were common sights, wreaking havoc on Valley.[5] Animalfolk weavers began to teach themselves magic to protect their companions. Lily of the Valley, the champion of the Order of the Holly Leaf, wielded the sword Cragflame and drove the Calamity Beasts away from Valley. Over time, the use of magic drove some weavers mad, and the rest set aside the great weavings in favor of small ones anyone could manage.

Around 4564 AR, the Calamity beasts began to ravage Valley once again after an era of relative peace.[5] A group of small warriors and misfits under the leadership of Mabel attempted to stop the beasts.

Known locations

  • Valley, the bucolic and vibrant home to the plane's animalfolk.[3]
    • The Cliff of Heroes, a cliff on the highest of hills in Valley scaled by its bravest inhabitants.[5]
    • Dewrim, between Pondside and Mintvale on the main road.[4]
    • Fountainport, home of King Glarb[4]
    • Goodhill, a town with white-petal roofs and woven grass walls interspersed with larger, painted clay burrows and a tall windmill.[4] Colorful glass rainwater collectors line its cobbled street. Towering above it all, the wooden homes of batfolk stand atop long poles. Goodhill has a diverse population of many species.
    • Haymeadow, at the southern point of Valley's main road.[4] It is closer to Pondside than Goodhill is.[6]
    • Kell's Ridge[5]
    • Mintvale, north of Dewrim on the main road.[4]
    • The burnt ruins of Pondside, a small village beside a pond.[4] It sat between Haymeadow and Dewrim on the main road and was near Goodhill. It had a diverse population but with no squirrelfolk. It was destroyed by Maha around 4564 AR.[6]
      • Pond Creek, the thin stream that feeds the larger pond beyond.[4] It reaches near Goodhill.[5]
    • The northern country[4]
    • The Long River,[6] the long river that Three Trees City was built along. To the south, it passes Pondside. One of its tributaries veers southwest.
      • Three Trees City,[2] a forest city formed by the intertwining of an oak, sycamore, and willow tree on the banks of the Long River.[6] Buildings and fungal paths decorate its canopy and trunk. The city was founded to harmonize with nature, which is apparent in its organic layout.
        • The Docklands,[6] a sprawling array of docks and rafts off the bank of the Long River. It lies under the tendrils of the Willow. The Docklands are the center of trade for Three Trees City.
        • The Quilted District, in the city's heart.[6] It is named after its vast quilted banner symbolizing the union of all animalfolk.
        • The Willow, one of the three trees.[6]
    • An unnamed limestone-cavern village inhabited by ratfolk lorekeepers. One of its entrances along the Long River is covered by a mussel shell, and its tunnels are illuminated by enchanted lights. Long ago it was burrowed by an extinct species of enormous insects. [7] It is southwest of Fountainport.
    • A dandelion field[7] somewhere between the unnamed ratfolk caverns and Fountainport. It is inhabited by an animal-shifted dragon from another plane.
  • The Outer Woods,[6] which presumably surrounds Valley.
  • The Calamity Graveyard[6]
  • The Ever-Burning Oak[7]

Inhabitants

Animalfolk

The animalfolks of Bloomburrow have an advanced culture and are the main characters of the set. They wear clothing, talk, and wield magic. They're animals, not animal humanoids,[8] and they are in scope, meaning that they retain their natural size.

Other animals

Not every animal on Bloomburrow is sapient, and are not considered animalfolk by the inhabitants of the Valley.

Weaving

The use of magic, known as "weaving," is common among the animalfolk.[4] Otters can influence the currents of the rivers.[6] Lizards use fire magic, and frogs water magic and augury. Among the squirrelfolk, there are necromancers. More powerful magic is generally avoided, as it has been known to corrupt its weavers.[5]

The frogfolk use their magic to play the game of bubbleball.[6]

Community

Villages are close-knit and hospitable to outsiders. The folk of Valley tend to live with their family. They are known to marry cross-species.[6]

Non-planeswalkers

  • Loot[6]
  • Vraska[6]
  • A dragon from an undetermined plane. Due to the magic of the plane, it took the form of a bird with a hooked beak flanked by whiskery protrusions, a thick, forked tongue, and a crest at the top of its head. Instead of two wings, it has four wings with fingers at their tips, membranes like a bat's, and large talons. Helga saw it first in a vision[4] and Ral then fought it in a dandelion field between Three Trees City and Fountainport.[7]
