Tenth Edition Rules card
Lorwyn Rules card

Rule cards or Tips & Tricks cards are extra cards inserted in booster packs that explain a theme or mechanic found in that set. They were first introduced in the Tenth Edition, although Legends boosters had a rules card which was introduced there when the decision of not printing Legends as a standalone set was made, and Portal had ten strategy cards with deck-building tips. Rules cards alternate as the 16th in the booster packs, with tokens produced by something in the relevant sets.[1] Magic 2013 onwards, rules cards were replaced by more generic marketing cards. The ratio between token cards and other marketing cards was further shifted heavily in favor of tokens in Battle for Zendikar. The new ratio is "approximately 9:10" for tokens.
